First generation freefall ride, located in the spot now occupied by King Chaos. I'm a HUGE fan of these rides, and unfortunately, there's only one of them left in the U.S.- the Demon Drop at Cedar Point. There is simply, no ride experience like it. You board a four person "elevator car" and ascend a 13 story tower. Once at the top your car moves forwards, like a possessed elevator, pushing you off a building. You are held there for a couple seconds and then dropped for a real, freefall experience. The car then turns so it's laying on it's back, very similar to going down one of those speed slides at a waterpark. Then, the car backs up, and descends onto the boarding station track, where it set upright again, and backs into the loading area for the next set of victims! This was an awesome ride at Great America, with cool orange/burnt orange color scheme, a great looking entrance sign, and was very eye catching and commanding in it's location in Orleans Place. Unfortunately, in 1984, there was an accident, in which a car got stuck about 3/4ths of the way up the tower, and came back down the lift, injuring a few teens. They ended up being okay, but the ride had earned a reputation as being unsafe, even though modifications were made to the Edge and all freefall rides like it, and no such accident ever occurred again. After the Edge reopened, ridership was low, and the ride was removed the following year. I really miss this ride and am upset that Six Flags finally removed their last freefall when the Freefall at Magic Mountain was torn down in 2008. Get to Cedar Point, because Demon Drops days may be numbered too.
