Title: SFGAm Purchases Kiddieland's Little Dipper

jonrev - November 24, 2009 10:18 PM (GMT)
Hot off the press; SFGAm purchased the Kiddieland Little Dipper for $33,000 today at the auction, and it supposedly will be relocated to a childrens area within the park!

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/11...tion-rides.html

This is an excellent move by the park!

Discuss!

Holy Shit! SFGAm has now got a new coaster right away? Fought it was Chang. So the article said that the ride will be open next year? Let see what happns.

If not in Splash's spot...

Could probably squeeze it closer to Wolf and have room for queue along the west-side of the coaster.

Don't forget BBNP has a large net climb structure that hasn't been used in years.

superbleachbrothers - November 25, 2009 02:20 AM (GMT)
I would think that the Little Dipper would be on the Splash area because GA has not used it for about a couple years since the ride was removed. They said that the ride would be one of the kiddie areas: BBNP, WW, and CC.

Nice area for LD Jon. It seems that the ride might replace The Jetsons Ride in Camp Cartoon. Since the ride is made by Vekoma, there are no problems even for a coaster by Vekoma. It may not be there.

I don't think that the ride will be near by the Space Ship ride since the sign says "Future Attraction." I believe that the Chang will be there not LD.

Also, I have NEVER rode on the LD before or been to the park.

$33,000 wow that seems like a pretty good deal.

Six Flags Great America Purchases Historic Wooden Coaster

Purchase of Classic Wooden Coaster from Kiddieland Amusement Park Keeps Chicago History Alive

Six Flags Great America announced today the purchase of a vintage wooden roller coaster, The Little Dipper. The coaster operated at Kiddieland Amusement Park from 1950 until September of this year when the amusement park closed. The coaster will retain its original name and become the 14th coaster in Six Flags Great America's impressive line-up of roller coasters.

The Little Dipper was designed by Herbert Schmeck and built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1950. It has been honored with the ACE Coaster Classic award by the American Coaster Enthusiasts.

"The Little Dipper has been a fond family tradition for over 50 years," said
Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America's park president. "We wanted to preserve this important piece of Chicago history for families to experience for many more years to come."

Guests can create a season of memories on The Little Dipper with a 2010 Season Pass which is on sale now at sixflags.com for the low price of $64.99. Excellent!

Hi All,

I keep hearing various reports about the Dipper from Kiddieland and some other ride (Chang?)
But now I have seen two or three reports about the Space Shuttle theater being gone and a possible expansion of Hurricane Harbor? Which may or may not include having it as a separate park with an additional fee?
Is any of that true or plausible? Having the waterpark as an additional fee would really be a death nail for both parks. I hope that part isn't true. If anyone has any additional (especially credible) info, please post it!

Confirmed: Little Dipper is going up somewhere in the park. It is not known where though.

Confirmed: Space Shuttle America has been removed. Recent pictures from the park prove this. There is a link somewhere around here that shows it.

Rumor: Chang will be built at SFGAm. Pieces of the ride have been appearing at the park though.

Speculation: SSA was removed to make room for Chang. One of the best places to put the ride is at the front of the park where SSA was.

Rumor that has been going on for a while: There will be a massive Hurricane Harbor expansion and it will be a separate admission. This likely has no credibility right now and I don't see it happening for the 2010 season.

Tiki - January 6, 2010 02:17 AM (GMT)
Hi,

Well, I am all for expanding Hurricane Harbor, but I sure hope it doesn't become a separate gate. At least not until the economy gets a little better anyway.
What is the Chang thing? Is that a roller coaster or something else?
I like coasters and I have been on that Dipper one from Kiddieland, but that was many cheeseburgers ago. At 6'3" and 300Lbs I try to stay on the rides made of steel! It would be somewhat embarrassing to fly/fall thirty feet into the middle of the park with a piece of a wooden bench stuck in my..............because my girth collapsed the ride!

Luxornv - January 8, 2010 07:49 AM (GMT)
For more on Chang: http://rcdb.com/275.htm
Basics of it is that is was one of the best coasters at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. It was closed earlier this season and has since begun to be disassembled and pieces have began appearing at SFGAm.

I'd assume Little Dipper is going to be massively overhauled before it's opened at SFGAm. It will be safe for someone of your size to ride, it would just be a question of if you can fit. I've had that problem on a few rides at the park and I'm a little smaller.

Tiki - January 9, 2010 12:11 AM (GMT)
Hi,

I probably won't fit in it anymore.
And I learned a frightening lesson about squeezing into rides I shouldn't have.
I very nearly went right over the edge of one of the water slides at Magic Waters! Had it not been for the fact that the hand of God pushed me off the inflatable tube and back into the slide, I would have fallen 30 feet to the pavement below. I knew I was too large for that ride when I got on it and within the very first turn I was going so fast and riding so high on the outside of the slide that I knew I wouldn't make the next turn. I actually hit my tailbone on the top edge of the slide right before I flopped back off the tube and into the slide channel again. So me. the tube and all the little green apples I (expletive) all came down separately.
I also got hurt on the Tornado when it first opened at SFGA probably because I am too heavy. Tore my trunks and got a real nice bruise on my back in that one.
I am going to stick to lounging around by Skull Island!

superbleachbrothers - January 9, 2010 09:22 PM (GMT)
I believe that SFGAm will be at the No Coaster Con Event in a few days. So we might to ask them about the Little Dipper and Chang. I will not be there.

SO IF SFGAM TALKS ABOUT CHANG, it might give us hints. For the Little Dipper, they will tell us about the location of the ride and all that stuff.

Tiki - January 14, 2010 07:16 PM (GMT)
I just received an e-mail from SFGA telling me to buy a pass for $64.99 and enjoy memories on the Little Dipper on opening day. So I assume it will be ready for opening day after all!

jonrev - January 17, 2010 07:29 AM (GMT)
The No Coaster Con crowd is reporting Dipper will be running by June in a part of Bugs Bunny National Park, but will have its entrance in Yukon. They are keeping the ride, including the station, pretty close to original, but are adding a safety system.

superbleachbrothers - January 17, 2010 03:21 PM (GMT)
I'm really surprised that the Little Dipper is going to be in BBNP. I really never predicted that the ride would be in the Area, but great location!!

About the Con, I heard that the LD will be opening by June. About Chang, they NEVER MENTION about the ride or the rumors itself, BUT they actually told us that Chang Blue Pipe. They had a water break down so they used the blue pipe to fix it. If SFGAm is using the pipe, why the hell are they using it as a supple to fix the god damn pipe!!! Maybe they don't want to talk about Chang and they just want to keep it as a "Secret." Its just my guess.

I'm really pissed about this but, Iron Wolf is NOT getting Chang trains for next year or the year after that. So If Chang is not coming, we shall remember Chang that we always wanted for years. If Chang comes to the park, we could have TWO Stand Up Coasters operation.

I'm really excited that the Little Dipper will be coming in June. So I hope that Little Dipper would be great and families can relive their memories.

DejaVu2001 - January 17, 2010 04:20 PM (GMT)
^ I guessed that spot as soon as I heard they got Dipper. Its the only place Dipper will fit in a kids area with out removing rides that are still in operation.

As for the "blue pipe", that was a joke. I can't believe anyone would actually have taken something so absurd seriously.

david - January 18, 2010 05:46 AM (GMT)
^^ If he would say that about Chang's support, he could say that about "Iron Wolf"

What the hell are you trying to say? Are you saying that the blue pipe was not actually a part of Chang, but was just in fact a pipe used to fix a water main? This is why grammar is important. When you don't use proper grammar you just look stupid. I'm not saying that you need to know every rule about the English language and how to properly use gerunds and other weird things most people never use. However, when you make a post, each sentence needs a subject and a predicate. The subject tells what you're talking about, and the predicate explains what the subject did. Please use this.

david - April 14, 2010 12:35 PM (GMT)
Dameon said that the "big-blue pipe" was a replacement pipe for a water main break. Although it was only a joke.

WGN is reporting Dipper will be open Memorial Day weekend.

Go-figure; I'm out of town that weekend.

Jackluver19 - May 23, 2010 03:52 AM (GMT)
It's coming along rather nicely. The train was on today when I walked by it, they're almost done painting it and they're just adding the last minute touches. It looks really good.

Where are you going on the weekend?

Ilovthevu' - May 24, 2010 02:30 AM (GMT)
I really, really, really doubt that The Little Dipper will be open Memorial Day Weekend. They aren't done painting the ride, and they are still working on the track with the train there. I don't know if it's stuck (the train), or are they just pulling it through the track, but they are still fixing the track right after where the train is stuck.

The ride has Deja Vu blue on it - white and Deja Vu blue. Yeah!! I seen what looked like to me the Deja Vu Mickey D working on the Little Dipper. How ironic. Deja Blue, and Deja Vu mickey D.

Per the usual,

Ilovthevu' is wrong.

LD is testing and should be open this weekend.

Some nut wrote a comment about The little Dipper opening today in the Daily Herald. Read Below:

Jackpot :: Thu May 27, 2010 3:59 PM Great America should have bought all the rides. They are lacking kiddie rides there, which is why those of us with little ones don't go there. They had the chance to turn it back into a family park instead of a punk park. So glad Little Dipper is safe.

This person probably should be called CRACK POT instead of Jack Pot! They obviously don't know much about disposable incomes at target levels, etc.
Who has the most disposable income, and spends it the most freely?
1. 18-34 year old males.
2. Females in almost the same age bracket.

Families with little ones? Two points under Aboriginal pygmies with webbed feet! That's why "Kiddieland" went broke!

Ilovthevu' - May 27, 2010 09:16 PM (GMT)
I found a real dinky segment from Channel 7.

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=r...nity&id=7463348

Doesn't even look like their are news people there.

superbleachbrothers - May 27, 2010 10:27 PM (GMT)
Did anybody see the LD report on ABC5 at 5? I just saw it. I really excited to ride this whenever my next trip will be in June.

jonrev - May 29, 2010 05:21 AM (GMT)
Dipper had a soft opening today from around 6:30 to 8:30. Afterward it trouble light stopped on the lift, and the rest of the line was allowed to ride after coming back up. It then shut down for the night about 10 minutes before park closing.

I will be at the grand opening tomorrow.
