Title: Round Lake Roller Rink Shutting Down
jonrev - January 23, 2010 05:16 AM (GMT)
I'm sure many of us in the Grayslake/Round Lake/Gurnee area went here at least once. Sadly, it's all coming to an end tomorrow.

That's too bad. I went there with the family about a year ago. It seemed a bit raggedy and had seen better days, but it was a good deal and pretty fun.
It would be hard to compete against that Kristoffs place not too far away.
jonrev - February 3, 2010 12:26 AM (GMT)
They had been competing with each other since at least the 70s.
Tiki - February 3, 2010 05:07 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I guess they had a lot of new issues working against them. For one, the insurance for a roller rink has got to be astronomical especially if they ever had a large claim. The area demographic has increased manufacturing and decreasing residential.
Unlike Kristoffs, they were way off the beaten path. I lived there for five years before I ever heard of the place.
And let's face it; with the exception of the older people like me who are now going to the gym and eating better, the kids today are far more sedentary than in past generations. If it doesn't involve a joystick or a keyboard or at least some sort of electro-mechanical device and it's not something edible, the younger people usually don't want any part of it.

Fixed.

I didn't really notice that much retail stuff by the roller rink. I know there is scads of retail that cropped up all around Kristoff's.
I remember they were building some sort of municipal garage or something and the rest seemed like junk yards and stuff like that.

That entire intersection of Hainesville and Washington near the Roller Rink has changed. Tullio's and the apartments behind it are gone and a Thorntons is there. Sign Central moved next door and a hot dog joint is now in there. Except for the KFC, LJS, and A&W, the retail near Kristoff's has been there for decades.

I am just not that familiar with that area. When we lived in Gurnee, we were in Grandwood Park and only went west of there occasionally.
Our synagogue is on Barron in Grayslake (used to be a piano store.) And a friend of mine owns the Bridgestone/Firestone place on Grand Ave. also owns a strip mall near Hainesville Rd and 120 that I have been to a couple of times. Like I said, we lived there for five years before we ever heard of the roller rink.

Across from GFX? That's a few blocks away from me.
Tiki - February 11, 2010 08:46 PM (GMT)
Hi,
Yes. That's the one (Or Tikvah) 330 Barron Blvd. Red building with white posts.
I couldn't think of the name of that big factory across the street but it is GFX.
We belong to that synagogue and one in Skokie that's closer to our house in(Winnetka)
I love that Root Beer stand just around the corner! I can't think of the name of that place either, but the food is good!

Dog n Suds. Everything there is fantastic! They were supposed to stay open this winter but didnt make it through December.
Demon_10 - February 11, 2010 11:54 PM (GMT)
I love Dogs and Suds!!!! Makes Sonic look awful
jonrev - February 11, 2010 11:59 PM (GMT)
Even better, for me at least, is I'm within walking distance from it.
I found DnS root beer at Kmart the other day. Always great stuff.
Demon_10 - February 12, 2010 12:04 AM (GMT)
So where is that from Sammie's?
jonrev - February 12, 2010 12:06 AM (GMT)
Dog n Suds from Sammies? Short drive down 83 and make a left on Center. Can't miss it. There's also another DnS in Ingleside across from the Metra station.
Demon_10 - February 12, 2010 12:10 AM (GMT)
Thanks, I've only been to the one in Fox Lake but i think the grayslake one's even closer to me.
jonrev - February 12, 2010 12:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah, Fox Lake is further north.

Dog N Suds! Dog N Suds!
They don't have any indoor seating at the Grayslake location do they? So I can understand why winter might be tough on their business. A lot of people won't eat in their cars. I don't like to eat in my cars.
There was a place just down the street on the corner that changed hands a few times. I think it was called Char-Burger or something like that. It had indoor seating as I recall.
jonrev - February 23, 2010 04:39 AM (GMT)
That place was originally a Hardees. It became a 50s diner for a few years, spent 10 years as Charcoal Delights (which was mostly crap), and now it's called Jacks and they have really nice greasy shit. Their car show isn't that bad either during the summer, took the Fiero there a few times.
Dog n Suds re-opened last week.
Tiki - February 25, 2010 01:08 PM (GMT)
They have a car show too? I remember they used to have car shows at the McDonalds on Grand Ave. every so often.
I'll be up that way next week. I think I'll swing by Dog N Suds. I really enjoyed their food.
jonrev - February 25, 2010 06:44 PM (GMT)
Nostalgia McDonalds on Grand Ave. does car shows every Friday from May through October, weather-permitting. I'm usually there every week with my Fiero.
Tiki - February 25, 2010 11:31 PM (GMT)
Then we've probably crossed paths there too. I have been there many times during those car shows. I like to bring my Maybach there for people to touch and scratch. (Just kidding.)
I don't suppose there would be much point in bringing my classic 2000 Kia Sephia to the show?
octopi23 - February 26, 2010 01:38 PM (GMT)
There are a lot of really good places just around Round Lake with some amazing food. I'd make suggestions but I don't want to advertise for them.
But yeah, Dog N' Suds is insanely good.
Tiki - February 26, 2010 04:15 PM (GMT)
I miss that Golden Corral joint. There's nothing like that around me.
Loki - February 4, 2011 07:20 AM (GMT)
well fuck... expect a Walgreens or other retarded retail place here in the near-future...
